Park Rules

These aren’t polite formalities. The park is these creatures’ real home; we are just passing guests.

01

No feeding

Bread and rice leave birds malnourished, and make them crowd together and lose their foraging skills. The park’s birds can feed themselves perfectly well.

02

No picking

Picking a flower takes away a chance for fruit. Chinese mahonia has spiny leaves and star jasmine has poisonous sap — don’t touch them and then put your hands to your mouth.

03

Keep your distance

If a bird stops eating and keeps looking up at you, you are already too close. Step back a few paces and it will usually return.

04

No flash

Bright flashes cause brief blindness, which is especially dangerous for birds raising young in dark places. Use a zoom lens, or simply use your eyes.

05

No chasing, no playing birdsong

Playing calls from a phone tricks birds into thinking there is an intruder, wasting the energy they need to defend their territory.

06

Stay on the paths

Stepping into the undergrowth crushes ground-cover plants and may startle the blackbirds and laughingthrushes foraging on the ground.
