Trachelospermum jasminoides
A climbing vine that grows naturally in Shanghai
An evergreen woody vine that clings to walls, rocks and tree trunks with aerial roots along its stems — its Chinese name means “wrapping around stone”. It is a native species that grows naturally in Shanghai and East China, not an introduced garden plant.
In early summer it bears small white flowers whose five petals twist in the same direction like tiny pinwheels, with a strong scent that is richest in the evening. Please note: it belongs to the dogbane family, and broken stems and leaves ooze a poisonous white sap. Do not pick it, and keep children from putting it in their mouths.
