Northern Sea Oats
Chasmanthium latifolium
An ornamental plant with spike-like flower heads
An ornamental grass native to North American woodlands. The attraction is not its flowers but the strings of flat spikelets that hang down afterwards — paper-thin and pressed flat, they tap against each other in the wind like a string of little fish.
Unlike most ornamental grasses, northern sea oats tolerates part shade, so it is often planted under trees. After the plant turns straw-coloured in winter, the spikelets stay on the stems and glow a translucent pale brown against the light — a rare detail in the winter garden.
