Oriental Magpie-Robin

Much smaller than a magpie, but its sharp black-and-white pattern and long, cocked, flicking tail often earn it the name “little magpie”. Males are glossy black above with a blue-purple metallic sheen; females are greyer-brown and softer in colour.

One of the finest songbirds in the park. Its song is clear and varied — a single bird can sing more than a dozen different phrases — and in the breeding season it starts before dawn. It mostly hops on the ground or among low shrubs catching insects, and when it pauses it likes to raise its tail upright and then lower it slowly.
